Description

First Pride Picnic was held on June 26, 1983

Before parades, there were Pride Picnics and Pride Festivals, private events where gays and lesbians could celebrate pride month without the fear of being outted by television cameras.  They were held at Turkey Lake Park, Lake Whipporwill, Camp Heronwood, and the Central Florida Fairgrounds livestock pavilion before eventually combining with the Pride Parade celebration in downtown Orlando.

"In the early years, pride picnics consisted of volunteers putting a sound system and a keg of beer in their car and heading to the biggest private park we could find that would allow us gather and grill. The media was not invited" - David Bain
