Description
The Center
The Center was formed by an ad hoc group who broke from Gay Community Services after board members were reluctant to participate in the effort to form Orlando's first physical presence representing the gay and lesbian community.
The small leased building on Mills Avenue opened with a lobby, small library, 2 meeting rooms, office, and fenced in back yard. The Center offered various groups meeting facility, social activities, and counseling services.
Within the first year, The Center began to struggle financially, and both organizations struggled for volunteers and fundraising.
Michael Wanzie spearheaded the rejoining of the two organizations at a meeting held at his home with the two boards and an agreement was reached for The Center to dissolve and the building became known as the GLCS Center.
