Title

Letter: American Red Cross Thank You (1990)

Description

A letter addressed to the Coalition of the Gay & Lesbian for Human Rights thanking the organization for their donation to earthquake relief in Iran. In the letter, Carl Franzen assures that the donation will be channeled through the Red Cross League to the Iranian Red Crescent Society and not to the Iranian government.

On June 21, 1990, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck a region near the Caspian Sea killing 50,000 people and injuring an additional 135,000. The Iranian provinces of Zanjan and Gilan suffered the greatest—in one 80-mile stretch every building was destroyed and every resident was killed. The incident triggered a global relief response, despite protest from the Iranian government.
