Ron Kimber was born on Valentine’s Day February 14, 1964 - and was buried on the
23rd anniversary of his birth - February
14, 1987 - having died in the early hours of
February 13th due to lymphoma caused by
HIV - AIDS. Born and raised in Winter Park
Florida he maintained a lifetime friendship
with childhood friend Mike Nesheim. Ron
had an energy and spark that was infectious.
He was handsome and full and life and just
being around him was like being at a party.
He was a budding artist and bit of a poet
who was more than at home working behind
the ladies fragrance counter at Dillard's
where all the Winter Park women loved him.
Michael Wanzie fell in love with Ron at first
sight, and within 3 weeks of meeting, Ron
moved in with Wanzie and the two shared
many wonderful adventures together
including New Years Eve dinner at Windows
On the World high atop the World Trade
Center in NYC. Ron's father had banished
him from the family home when Ron first
came out to him. Ron and his Dad (and Ron
and his older brother) had not spoken in
over 2 years, when Wanzie phoned Ron's
parents (whom he had never met) to tell
him their son lay dying in Florida Hospital.
Ron struggled with his very last bits of
energy to summon a voice from his failing
body and he did most of talking making
certain to console and forgive and provide
comfort to family members who had turned
against him, so that they could be relieved
of guilt and remorse; such was the extent of
his compassion. He was not afraid to die.
Ron was a peace and as always, was happy
to embark on a new adventure. Once he was
certain everyone he was leaving behind was
in the best possible place they could be
under the circumstances, Ron left this world
without complaint, confident that he had
lived his all-too-short life to the very fullest.

Ryan Skipper
April 28, 1981 - March 14, 2007
Born in Winter Haven where he was raised by his mom, Patricia, and step dad, Lynn
Mulder, Ryan Skipper was brutally murdered in 2007 because he was gay. Outgoing and
popular, Ryan lived his short life openly in rural Polk County where he attended college
and aspired to one day open an internet cafe. But in March 2007, Ryan was targeted and
violently stabbed to death by William Brown, Jr. (age 20), and Joseph Bearden (age 21),
who admitted they did it because Ryan was gay. The brutal hate crime originally
received very little local media coverage. But Ryan's story was featured in a 2008
documentary, "Accessory to Murder," and his killers' trials ultimately received national
media attention in 2009 by CNN and TRU TV. Both of Ryan's murderers are now serving
life sentences with no chance of parole. In 2009, Ryan's brother, Damien Skipper,
attended the White House signing of the Mathew Shepard Act after President Obama
became aware of Ryan's story. Ryan's parents, Patricia & Lynn Mulder, who still live in
Polk County, are passionate activists who never miss an opportunity to speak out on
behalf of LGBT equality.

Saviz Shafaie
1950-2000
As a university student in 1972, Shafaie, baffled by sociological questions surrounding sexual orientation,
delivered a pioneering research speech, an investigative look at the treatment given same sex love that was
prevalent in Iranian social patterns. Expecting a small turnout, Shafaie was astounded when several
hundred of his peers at the University of Shiraz gathered to hear him.
In 1976, pursuing his education, Shafaie arrived in the United States, where he continued his studies of
sexuality and gender. At Syracuse University, he gradually became involved with the growing gay and
lesbian liberation movement. He finally emerged – as a result of a conscious and deliberate decision – as an
openly gay man, all the while earning his master’s degree in sociology.
Moving to Orlando, Florida in the early 1980s, Shafaie turned his personal evolution into a series of ongoing
political statements. He was quick to see that various social crusades – including the peace movement, the
anti-sexist men’s movement, the feminist cause, as well as racial, ethnic, and human rights concerns could
be linked. He took an active part in these various movements, successfully urging – in the Orlando area –
that they support civil rights and social acceptance of those who, like himself, felt strong emotional and
sexual bonds with individuals of their own gender.
Shafaie opened a natural foods store (Power House), located in Winter Park, where he provided materials
relevant to the aforementioned causes, including gay and lesbian rights. He organized demonstrations and
educational events, appearing on TV and radio, and receiving Central Florida’s Spectrum Award (1995) for his
efforts at promoting a meaningful recognition of diversity among the area’s citizens. Again, on March 9,
1997, he received both the Spectrum Male Activist and Male Role Model Award.
