On June 21, 1990, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck a region near the Caspian Sea killing 50,000 people and injuring an additional 135,000. The Iranian provinces of Zanjan and Gilan suffered the greatest—in one 80-mile stretch every building was destroyed and every resident was killed. The incident triggered a global relief response, despite protest from the Iranian government.]]>
